A means to an end -- an activity that isn't as important as the goal one hope to achive.
An end in itself -- something that exists for its own sake for no clear purpose.
And finally my impromptu that is missing from the dictionary: A means to an end in itself.
What can it possibly mean? Doing unimportant activity for its own sake?
