"We called him a fucktard a lot and he continued getting paid his £1000 per day contract rate.

When it comes to dev banks like to spend money and don't seem to care what is delivered. They are also pretty poor at assessing developer skills. That project had 5 project managers all on £2000 per day. I worked out that the whole team was burning about £32k a day and the project was about 3 years late. My company had quoted them around £1million for the project and we would have completed in 6 months. Their internal team must have gone through £20million at least, but apparently we were too expensive.

One day, the whole trading floor was shut down because the pricing engine had stopping emitting prices. Turns out the pricing engine was getting base prices from a web page using a screen scraper. Literally a curl script run off a cron job that grepped out the prices. The web page got updates after several years of staying the same and it took out a major banks trading floor. It is a fucking miracle any of it works and so open to abuse you would not believe."
