Пригоди (у Бурській війні) українських, білоруських та литовських євреїв, які поїхали у ПА за золотом у кінці 19 ст (на стороні бурів; у тексті позначенні як "Russian Jews"):

'The Russian bureaucracy did not recognise Jewish émigrés as compatriots. A South African author wrote: "While other nationals had the protection of their respective governments, the Russian Jews in the Transvaal and the Orange Free State Republics had no one to whom to turn. The Tsarist government refused to protect their Jewish nationals."

'Some Russian Jews would have liked to join the detachment formed by Russian volunteers under Lieutenant Ganetsky, but they were not admitted. The Russian Commando "was careful to exclude" what it called the "Russian Border Israelites"'

Треба було іммігрувати з України на іншу сторону глобуса, щоб (а) почати воювати проти єдиної імперії, яка завжди терпіти не могла Московитів, (б) знову зустріти радісний натовп кацапів, які тебе навіть за людину не вважають:

'Many Russian volunteers [...] would remark on the hospitality of the Jewish émigrés from Russia, yet they would treat with arrogance and contempt even the very Jews with whom they fought side by side in the same commando and who helped them to understand what was going on. To [Lieutenant Yevgeny] Augustus, who normally referred to his fellow volunteers at least by their initials or the first letters of their surnames, all Jews were just "a Jew", or "the Jew".'

Як київський афериста казково став "цивільним інженером" ув Африці, але потім з англійцями посварився. Узнаю брата Колю:

'Among the volunteers there was, for instance, one Nikolaiev, listed as a civil engineer in the roll call of the volunteers compiled by the Russian Military Attache, Gurko. He was known as a generous and hospitable person and was much admired for bringing a whole unit of Chernogorians (Montenegrins) out to South Africa.

'But Nikolaiev was not what he seemed. "Who would have supposed then," wrote [Lieutenant] Augustus with some bitterness, "that this fighter for the cause who seemed to have money to burn, was actually just a clerk from a commercial institution in Kiev, who had been infatuated by the Boers to such a degree that he had secretly escaped to the Transvaal, carrying somebody else's passport and, as one might expect of such a bold and energetic cashier, a large sum of (stolen) money.'

І найтиповіше:

'Despite the decision of the Russian detachment not to allow the Jews to join, Russian Jews treated the other Russians who came to fight for the Boers as their compatriots and tried to assist them in every possible way. [Lieutenant] Augustus mentioned, for instance, that on leaving Pretoria he and his friends had "met several intelligent Jews at the railway station, who spoke Russian well. They were sincerely glad, having recognised us as I their former compatriots, and wished us to return with victory. When we I entered the train, we found baskets in our seats with juicy peaches, bananas and oranges, and several boxes of fine cigars."'

Адін народ, so to speak. 120 років минуло, геть нічого не змінюється.

Звичайно, у ПА їхали не тільки українці, які сповідували іудаїзм. Ось, наприклад, бурхлива графоманія тогочасної київської ТП, яка зараз була б ув кієвском твіторє, яврпщя, або інфлуенсеркою:

'корабль в Южную Афріку отходіл только чєрєз пять днєй. [...] Пєрвиє дні новізна положєнія мєня стєсняла. Моя полнота пріводіла мєня в отчаяніє [...]

'Разґул бурной пріроди странно ґармоніровал с внутрєннєй бурєй, клокотавшєй в моєм сєрдцє. [...]

'Одна мисль о том, что Ніколай ласкаєт друґую, заставляла мєня ґорячо жєлать смєрті сєбє і єму [...]

'Солдати нєсколько раз обращалісь ко мнє со своїмі шуткамі, і я должна била отвєчать в іх духє, чтоби нє навлєчь на сєбя подозрєнія. Єщє по дороґє я замєтіла в чєртах ліца одноґо із конвоїров нєчто єврєйскоє.

'Коґда наступіл єґо чєрєд нє спать, я спросіла, нє ґоворіт лі он по-русскі; оказалось, что он русскій єврєй ["рускій єврєй", я не можу] і сражаєтся в армії, как доброволєц; разґоворівшісь, он стал жаловаться на строґость анґлійской дісціпліни. Я будто би шутя прєдложіла сто золотих в случає єґо побєґа со мной. Єврєй подумал і соґласілся, коґда увідал золото, я отдала єму всє в задаток, что імєла і обєщала єщє вдвоє в Прєторії і полную бєзопасность'

'Случай нє хотєл большє відєть, нашіх кіслих фізіономій і на єтот раз устроїл всє скоро і удачно [...]

'Корабль лєтєл в Марсєль, і в нашіх мислях уж рісовался любімєц всєх народов вєлікій і очароватєльний Паріж.'
